The author masterfully grounds the reader in historical fragments and specific settings through brief, impactful glimpses, often circling back to key themes to provide essential context. As a visual artist living in the diaspora who typically gravitates toward documentaries on history and art, encountering the raw, authentic truth of my homeland filled me with a mixture of wonder and profound sadness. Despite the inherent intensity of the work, the description of the 1996 Cricket World Cup victory—where prisoners and guards erupted in shared joy—was a deeply moving moment that made me laugh instinctively and left me with one haunting question: Why this war?
