“Where Clay Meets Color: A Performance Rooted in Memory and Nature”

​It was such an honor to be part of a performance at the opening of Tamil artist VPV's gallery show in Tonnerre - Bourgogne, close to Paris. VPV  a contemporary visual artist of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage, creates evocative works that explore identity, displacement, nature, civilization and ethnic conflict through mixed media, collage, paintings, and installations. Drawing on materials from his travels and heritage—sand, seashells, driftwood, and spices—his art reflects a deeply humanistic approach rooted in memory and geography. I was inspired by how he uses his practice to share Tamil culture and history with the world. For me, being an artist is not about money or fame, but about creating arts for people, telling stories, and sharing humanity—and that spirit was fully alive in both the performance and the exhibit.

In the performance, I wore a saree tied to a tree, mixed water with clay, and spread it on my hands and face before VPV applied pigments—symbolizing living with nature. I also had the chance to portray a moment of playing with children on the veranda—like we used to in Sri Lanka, sitting on the thinnai (veranda) and playing with sand. 

The entire performance—woven with sound, earthy textures, cultural elements, movement, and color—portrayed a lifestyle deeply connected to community living. I absolutely loved the spirit and energy we shared with the audience.

Wishing VPV all the best as he continues this important work—I’d be honored to join future performances. A big thanks as well to Appadourai Arvind for making this possible despite our hectic shoot schedule, and to Raj Nilavannane—it was a joy performing together ❤.

​Ce fut un immense honneur de participer à une performance lors du vernissage de l'exposition de l'artiste tamoul VPV à la galerie de Tonnerre, en Bourgogne, près de Paris. VPV artiste visuel contemporain d'origine tamoule sri-lankaise, crée des œuvres évocatrices qui explorent l'identité, le déplacement, la nature, la civilisation et les conflits ethniques à travers des techniques mixtes, des collages, des peintures et des installations. S'appuyant sur des matériaux issus de ses voyages et de son héritage – sable, coquillages, bois flotté et épices –, son art reflète une approche profondément humaniste, ancrée dans la mémoire et la géographie. J'ai été inspiré par la façon dont il utilise sa pratique pour partager la culture et l'histoire tamoules avec le monde. Pour moi, être artiste n'est pas une question d'argent ou de célébrité, mais de créer des œuvres pour les gens, de raconter des histoires et de partager l'humanité – et cet esprit était pleinement présent dans la performance comme dans l'exposition.

Lors de la performance, je portais un sari attaché à un arbre, mélangeais de l'eau et de l'argile et l'étalais sur mes mains et mon visage avant que VPV n'applique des pigments, symbolisant ainsi la vie en harmonie avec la nature. J'ai également eu l'occasion de représenter un moment de jeu avec des enfants sur la véranda, comme au Sri Lanka, assis sur le thinnai (véranda) et jouant avec le sable.

L'ensemble de la performance, tissée de sons, de textures naturelles, d'éléments culturels, de mouvements et de couleurs, a dépeint un style de vie profondément ancré dans la vie en communauté. J'ai adoré l'esprit et l'énergie que nous avons partagés avec le public.

Je souhaite à VPV le meilleur pour la suite de ce travail important ; je serais honoré de participer à de futures représentations. Un grand merci également à Appadourai Arvind pour avoir rendu cela possible malgré notre emploi du temps de tournage chargé, et à Raj Nilavannane ; ce fut un plaisir de jouer ensemble ❤.
