Kalachuvadu (meaning "Time's footprints") is far more than just a magazine; it is a vital intellectual and cultural cornerstone of contemporary Tamil society. Published monthly from Nagercoil, South India, this journal offers a consistently high-quality review of politics and culture, setting a benchmark for serious discourse in the region since its founding.


A Legacy of Literary ExcellenceThe magazine was initially launched in 1988 by the distinguished Tamil writer Sundara Ramaswamy (1931-2005). Though it had periods of hiatus and format changes—starting as a quarterly, becoming a bi-monthly, and finally a monthly since 2004—its commitment to thoughtful, non-commercial content has remained unwavering. Today, under the stewardship of Kannan Sundaram, it continues to be the flagship product of Kalachuvadu Publications.

The book reflects on the resilience shown in keeping the school alive through years of conflict and hardship, and offers heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated teachers and cherished classmates—especially those who are no longer with us.  Designed to echo the visual style of the 1980s, the book captures the spirit of that era, bringing the memories to life in both form and feeling. Vasuhan created it with the support of his classmates, especially Uma Thambiayah and Bhamini Mahinthan. Following its release, the book received high praise from both readers and critics—including a touching review from writer and former teacher, Mrs. Kohila Mahendran, who taught Vasuhan during his school days.

​Ce livre témoigne de la résilience de l'école, qui a survécu à des années de conflit et de difficultés, et exprime une profonde gratitude envers les enseignants dévoués et les chers camarades de classe, en particulier ceux qui nous ont quittés.  Conçu dans le style visuel des années 1980, ce livre capture l'esprit de cette époque, ravivant les souvenirs par la forme et l'émotion. Vasuhan l'a créé avec le soutien de ses camarades de classe, dont Uma Thambiayah et Bhamini Mahinthan.  Après sa sortie, le livre a reçu de nombreux éloges de la part des lecteurs et des critiques, notamment une critique touchante de l'écrivaine et ancienne enseignante Mme Kohila Mahendran, qui a enseigné à Vasuhan pendant ses années d'école.

நூறு புராணங்களின் வாசல் 2 - முபீன் சாதிகா

Under the title The Threshold of a Hundred Myths, Mubeen Sadhika has written a series of one-page micro–short stories. She also wrote a similar set of one hundred stories in the subsequent volume. Each of these stories centers on a single theme or object. The micro-stories are written in the mode of magical realism and offer readers a sense of wonder along with aesthetic pleasure. For the second volume, Sri Lankan Tamil artist Vasuhan contributed a striking cover illustration. Both volumes received wide acclaim and won the Nesamani Nagason Award. They have also been translated into Malay with a grant from the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Udal is a leading quarterly journal dedicated to the performing arts among the Sri Lankan Tamil society. Although published from France, it is distributed worldwide wherever Tamil communities live. The Tamil word 'Udal' carries two meanings: it refers to one of the oldest two-faced percussion instruments, and it also means "body," an element central to theatrical expression. My paintings were featured on the front covers of most issues of this journal. Furthermore, I collaborated with the editor-in-chief, Mr. Ariyanayakam, on various other performing arts-related artistic projects.

​உடல் ('Udal') என்பது இலங்கைத் தமிழ் சமூகத்தின் மத்தியில்  அர்ப்பணிக்கப்பட்ட முன்னணி அரங்கியல் சார் காலாண்டு இதழாகும். பிரான்சில் இருந்து வெளியிடப்படாலும் மற்றும் தமிழ் சமூகங்கள் வாழும் உலகெங்கிலும் விநியோகிக்கப்படுகிறது. 'உடல்' என்ற தமிழ் வார்த்தைக்கு இரண்டு அர்த்தங்கள் உள்ளன: இது மிகவும் பழமையான இருமுக தோல் இசைக்கருவிகளில் ஒன்றைக் குறிக்கிறது, மேலும் இது நாடக வெளிப்பாட்டிற்கு மையமான ஒரு அங்கமான "உடல்" (body) என்ற பொருளையும் குறிக்கிறது. இந்த இதழின் பெரும்பாலான வெளியீடுகளின் முன் அட்டைப் பக்கங்களில் எனது ஓவியங்கள் இடம்பெற்றன. மேலும், தலைமை ஆசிரியர் திரு. ஆரியநாயகம் அவர்களுடன் பல்வேறு அரங்கியல் தொடர்பான கலைத் திட்டங்களிலும் நான் இணைந்து பணியாற்றினேன்.

​Udal est une revue trimestrielle de référence consacrée aux arts du spectacle au sein de la communauté tamoule sri-lankaise. Bien que publiée en France, elle est diffusée dans le monde entier, partout où vivent des communautés tamoules. Le mot tamoul « Udal » possède une double signification : il désigne l’un des plus anciens instruments de percussion à deux faces et signifie également « corps », élément essentiel de l’expression théâtrale. Mes peintures ont fait la couverture de la plupart des numéros de cette revue. J’ai également collaboré avec le rédacteur en chef, M. Ariyanayakam, sur divers projets artistiques liés aux arts du spectacle.

​The exhibition’s title comes from the Tamil phrase “Koodu Kudumpam,” which loosely translates to “joint family.” It’s a term that once defined village life across much of South Asia—a life where cousins, aunts, grandparents, and grandchildren all shared a single household, shaped by shared meals, chores, and traditions.
In Ties of the Heart, Vasuhan turns this idea into a visual and spatial experience. His paintings and sculptures carry scenes many who’ve grown up in rural communities will instantly recognize: elders on the veranda, children playing barefoot in the dust, pots simmering in open-air kitchens. But it’s not a romanticized look back. The work acknowledges change—the move from villages to cities, the shrinking of families, the loss of oral tradition.

His recent project, WORKERS, brings that focus to the foreground. It’s not flashy. 
It doesn’t glorify labor in a distant, heroic way. Instead, it zooms in on the real people

Le mois de septembre est propice aux retours des événements culturels et des expositions. La galerie Impressions inaugure cette rentrée avec un accrochage singulier intitulé « Visages de la baie du Bengale ». L’exposition propose le regard de deux peintres sur l’état du monde à travers leurs cultures respectives, l’un du Bengladesh et l’autre du Sri-Lanka, V. P. Vasuhan, qui fait l’objet de cette livraison.
De la biographie à l’histoire
Le travail de ce peintre originaire du nord du Sri-Lanka ­— de la région de Jaffna comportant une population tamoule — est présenté dans la galerie Impressions de façon, non pas chronologique, mais ce sont trois parties qui composent un cheminement particulier.

The magical abstraction of V.P. Vasuhan
Cypriots have studied there since the 1920s, the Embassy in Nicosia has organised the prestigious Matisse Prize 
and our artists often exhibit in the city. And now V.P. Vasuhan from Jaffna - who has painted here in Cyprus -
 has a show, too.
V.P. Vasuhan's exhibition in Paris was a great success. Set in the beautiful basement of Annick Garin's Bayadere 
(which is filled with magnificent contemporary hand-loomed Sri Lankan fabric) his work makes new insights into 
the art of painting. Eros appears to be present on a great deal of the canvases but with surface incisions, 
writing and collage Vasuhan captures a fantasy image which surely is inherited from Sri Lankan culture as 
much as his interest in French art......

​வாசிப்புப் போலவே கலைகளுக்கான ஆர்வமும் கற்கை நெறிகளும்  மருகி வருகின்ற இக்கால கட்டத்தில் ஓவியங்கள், சிற்பக்கலைகள் சார்ந்து தனது திறமையை வெளிக்காட்டி வரும் வாசுகனின் படைப்புக்கள் வித்தியாசமானவையாகவே தென்படுகின்றன.

சில வருடங்களின் முன் ‘விழிகளுக்கு விருப்பமான சித்திரங்கள்’ என்னும் கட்டுரையில் ஆனி 2019 இல் கனடாவிலிருந்து வெளி வரும் 'தாயகம்' பத்திரிக்கையில் எழுத்தாளர் கலா மோகனும், அதன் பின்னர் ஆடி 2020இல்  'பெயரும் இல்லை முகமும் இல்லை - No Face, No Name’ - Migration and Identity - 'கலம் - யாழ்ப்பாணம்'  இணையவெளியில் பண்பாடுகளின் சந்திப்பு - 'என்னைச் சுதந்திரமாக இருக்க விடு' தலைப்பில் கவிஞர் விஜயேந்திரனும் வாசுகனின் ஓவியக் கலை பற்றி பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறார்கள்........
