Sri Lanka is an island, country in South Asia. It lies in the Indian Ocean, southwest of the Bay of Bengal, and southeast of the Arabian Sea. Independence in 1948.
The earliest human remains found on the island of Sri Lanka date to about 35, 000 years ago ( Balangoda man). 48,000-year-old bow-and-arrow found in Sri Lankan cave,arrowheads crafted from animal bone.
The first Tamil ruler of the Anuradhapura Kingdom, Ellalan, an invader, is recorded for the 2nd century, based on chronicles like the (Buddhism) Mahavamsa, Dipavamsa. The island was divided into numerous kingdoms over the following centuries, intermittently (between CE 993 - 1077) united under Chola rule. Sri Lanka was ruled by 181 monarchs from the Jaffna to Anuradhapura to Kandy periods. From the 16th century, some coastal areas of the country were also controlled by the Portuguese, Dutch and British. Indian forces occupied north and east part of the islands 1987- 1990. The Sri Lankan Civil War began in 1948, including an armed youth uprising in 1974, with the 35 year long civil war ending in 2009.
Almost all of world's religions are practiced in the small island of Sri Lanka. There are different religious festivals every month and mostly everyone participates in everyone else's festivals. And as a resuld Sri Lanka has more public holidays.
